Balancing a 9-5 Job and Indie Hacking
Sharing tips for managing full-time work and side projects
I want to share something very close to my heart: balancing a 9-5 job while pursuing indie hacking projects. As a web developer for 17 years and currently navigating this journey with my project, Pingify, I know firsthand how challenging this path can be.
Here’s how I manage it all.

My Time Management Strategies
1. Prioritizing Tasks:
Focusing on What Matters: This has been a lifesaver for me. I try to categorize tasks into urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither. It helps me stay focused on what truly matters, even if I don't always stick to it perfectly.
Clear and Achievable Goals: I aim to set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It keeps my efforts aligned and trackable, though I sometimes have to adjust on the fly.
2. Creating a Structured Schedule:
Blocking My Time: Working remotely gives me some flexibility, so I dedicate specific time blocks to my day job, side projects, and personal activities. Sticking to this schedule as closely as possible is vital, even if some days are more chaotic than others.
Utilizing Early Mornings or Late Evenings: For me, early mornings are often golden hours, but sometimes life gets in the way, and I have to adapt.
3. Leveraging Tools and Technology:
Task Management Apps: Trello is my go-to for organizing and tracking tasks.
Calendars and Reminders: Mac's built-in Calendar and Reminders apps are indispensable for keeping track of deadlines and important dates, even if I occasionally miss a reminder.
Productivity Hacks I Swear By
1. Breaking Tasks into Smaller Steps:
Microtasks: Tackling smaller, manageable microtasks makes larger projects less daunting. Sometimes, checking off a small task can give me the momentum I need.
Pomodoro Technique: I recently found this hack. I try to work in focused intervals (usually 25 minutes) followed by a short break. It helps maintain productivity, though I sometimes get carried away with longer breaks.
2. Minimizing Distractions:
Creating a Dedicated Workspace: I have a specific area set up just for my work and side projects, free from distractions. But let's be honest, the couch is also a frequent workspace.
Limiting Social Media and Notifications: Sometimes, I use my Mac's Focus feature to mute notifications and minimize distractions during work periods, even if I sneak a peek.
3. Automating and Delegating:
Using AI: Implementing AI tools like ChatGPT and automation software to handle routine tasks has been incredibly helpful.
Automation Tools: Tools like Zapier automate repetitive tasks, freeing time for more important work. They're not perfect, but they help.
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
1. Setting Boundaries:
Work Hours: I’ve defined specific work hours for both my remote 9-5 job and side projects, but I sometimes have to be flexible. It helps prevent burnout but isn't foolproof.
Communicating with Family and Friends: It has been crucial to ensure that my loved ones understand my schedule and the importance of my side projects, though it requires constant communication.
2. Taking Care of My Health:
Regular Breaks: Short walks, exercise, or simply stepping away from the screen help me recharge. I try my best, but some days are better than others.
Healthy Lifestyle: I strive for a balanced diet, regular exercise, and enough sleep, even if I don’t always achieve these goals.
3. Enjoying Downtime:
Pursuing Hobbies: Engaging in enjoyable activities helps me relax and stay creative.
Spending Quality Time: I make time for family and friends because personal connections are vital, even if it means juggling plans.
Balancing a remote 9-5 job with indie hacking projects is not easy, but with the right strategies and mindset, it’s definitely doable. Prioritizing tasks, managing time effectively, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are keys to success. Remember, it’s about consistency and persistence, even if it’s not perfect.
